SC’s Graham Urges Obama to Decide Before Runoff
Wed, October 28, 2009
COLUMBIA — U.S. Sen. Lindsey Graham says President Obama should decide whether to send more troops to Afghanistan before the runoff presidential election there Nov. 7.
The South Carolina Republican told reporters Wednesday the Taliban will try to disrupt the runoff between Afghan President Hamid Karzai and his challenger. Graham thinks an announcement to send troops would encourage the Afghan people to risk their lives to vote, while sending a message to the Taliban.
He says Obama is taking too long to decide.
Obama is nearing a decision on whether to commit large numbers of additional troops to the country next year. His top military commander in Afghanistan favors an increase of roughly 40,000 soldiers.
