SC State Police Investigate US Senate Candidate

COLUMBIA — The South Carolina State Law Enforcement Division is trying to determine how U.S. Senate candidate Alvin Greene got the money to pay his filing fee in the Democratic primary.
The State newspaper reported Monday that SLED and local prosecutors are trying to determine if any laws have been broken by the way Greene presented his financial situation in court.
SLED director Reggie Lloyd says agents will use a new law that allows them to issue an administrative subpoena to financial institutions.
The 32-year-old Greene won the Democratic nomination June 8 and says he saved up to pay the $10,400 filing fee.
Greene had requested a public defender on an obscenity charge pending in Columbia, but Public Defender Doug Striker says he no longer represents Greene, after being told he now has a private attorney.
