SC Growers Learn Latest in Growing Watermelons

CHARLESTON — It's a seedy event, but not the way you might think as growers from across South Carolina gather to learn the latest about growing watermelons.

The state Department of Agriculture is having a watermelon field day at the Edisto Research Center in the Barnwell County community of Blackville on Thursday.

Sessions include everything from the latest in fungicides to seeing varieties of seedless and mini watermelons in research plots.

The state's watermelon production is centered in the Lowcountry with most of the watermelons grown in Bamberg, Barnwell, Colleton, Allendale, Hampton, and Aiken counties.

The crop is also grown in the sandhills region of South Carolina with Chesterfield County the leading producer in that area.
