SC Councilman Wants to Ban Illegal Immigrants
Tue, July 13, 2010
SUMMERVILLE — A town councilman in South Carolina doesn't want any illegal immigrants working in his city. Or living there either.
The Post and Courier of Charleston reported that Summerville Councilman Walter Bailey says the federal government is not doing enough to prevent illegal immigration. Bailey says illegal immigrants are taking jobs from legal residents.
He wants to keep illegal immigrants from getting jobs or homes in Summerville. Bailey got the backing of a councilwoman at a committee meeting Monday.
The idea will be considered at a meeting Wednesday.
Another councilman, Aaron Brown, says the ordinance could create problems regarding enforcement.
Those seeking to rent homes in Summerville would be required to state whether they are American citizens.
