Mermaids from Florida return for Shows in Myrtle Beach
Associated PressFri, July 24, 2009
The Weeki Wachee Springs mermaid swimmers are returning to South Carolina for an encore performance. They will perform 12 shows from Friday through Sunday at Ripley's Aquarium in Myrtle Beach.
Aquarium officials say there was standing room only in front of Ray Bay, a 85,000 gallon saltwater tank, when the mermaids performed there last summer.
The Weeki Wachee Theater opened in 1947 on Florida's west coast and during the 1950s was one of the most popular tourist stops in the nation.
Last year's visit to Myrtle Beach was the first time in the history of the Florida attraction the mermaids performed away from their home.
