Local Missions Group to Send Medical Aid to Iraq
Mon, June 29, 2009
In July, Remember will be sending a team of nine medical professionals and other volunteers to Iraq to help with acute medical needs of refugees, persecuted Christians, and impoverished Iraqis. The team will include local pediatrician Dr. Robert Clifford, internist Dr. Chris McClain, Family Practitioner Dr. Curtis Haskins, pediatrician John Terwilliger, and attorney Curtis Bostic, and businessman, Rick Jackson.
Long a hotbed of violence and persecution, the religious oppression in Iraq has not stopped in recent years. Many Christians flee the country for their safety; but the surrounding countries that are willing to take them in, such as Syria and Jordan, often impose significant restriction on the ability of these refugees to obtain work, find adequate living quarters, and care for their families. Those who stay despite the danger face the same challenges and the struggle to provide basic necessities for one’s family often leaves nothing left over for medical treatment when it becomes necessary.
Remember, a 501(c)(3) organization based in Charleston, has sent teams and ongoing support to Christians in several countries around the world including Burma, Sudan, Jordan, China, Egypt, and Iraq. Remember’s goal is to help meet the needs of Christians who have suffered religious persecution, especially families that have lost their breadwinner to imprisonment or martyrdom. Remember’s operating costs are underwritten by the Bostic Law Firm, leaving 100% of contributions to go toward projects such as this Iraq Medical trip.
In July, the medical team will be traveling to a city in Iraq where they have been asked to supply medical care to patients who are otherwise without access to help. The in-country contacts for the trip have indicated that there are as many as 4,000 patients awaiting treatment.
Only limited information on this trip is available on the internet for security reasons, but check back in August for post-trip information and pictures at www.RememberThose.org.
