G-20 Security Officials say They’re Ready
Tue, September 22, 2009
PITTSBURGH — Security officials for the Group of 20 economic summit in Pittsburgh say they've thought of everything they can to keep the two-day event safe.
They created a communications center for more than 50 federal, state and local agencies, from city police to the federal agency responsible for the nation's spy satellites.
The center opens Wednesday. It is to be staffed around the clock until Friday evening, a few hours after the meeting of world economic leaders ends at the city's convention center.
Security precautions include a three-block security zone around the convention center and a ban on most vehicles elsewhere downtown. The Coast Guard also will close a five-mile, Y-shaped section of Pittsburgh's famed three rivers.
