Federal Judge: Construction on Port Can Continue
Associated PressWed, November 18, 2009
CHARLESTON — A federal judge has rejected an environmental group's request to stop a port expansion project in South Carolina.
Reportedly, work will continue on a shipping terminal the State Ports Authority is building on the former Navy base in North Charleston.
U.S. District Judge Weston Houck on Tuesday denied the Coastal Conservation League's request to halt construction until federal officials can study whether surrounding roads can handle the extra truck traffic. The group argued in a 2007 lawsuit the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers did not adequately analyze all the environmental and traffic effects before issuing a permit.
The conservation group hopes officials can still agree to build a rail line to take traffic off Interstate 26.
