Dirty work: Charleston County is Analyzing What It Throws Out
Wed, November 18, 2009
CHARLESTON — Officials in a coastal South Carolina county want to know what residents are throwing out, but not because they're nosy.
The analysis is being done by a consulting firm to better understand the items thrown out by county residents and develop a new waste management program. The county hopes to reach a goal of having 40 percent of its waste recycled.
Workers are analyzing waste from 45 truckloads of garbage from various parts of the county. As much as 12,000 pounds of trash is being separated into 27 categories ranging from paper and plastic to food waste and items that can be recycled.
