Container Traffic Through the Port of Charleston Drops 20%
Wed, August 19, 2009
CHARLESTON - The number of containers shipped through South Carolina ports dropped 20 percent in the past fiscal year. The Post and Courier reported that the State Ports Authority
board met Tuesday and discussed ways to reverse the decline. The 20 percent drop in containers for the fiscal year that ended June 30 followed a 10 percent decline the previous year.
Vice president of marketing and sales Fred Stribling says the port handled about the same number of containers last year that it had in 1999.
The board decided to pay its new executive for volume and strategic planning instead of operating margin. Jim Newsome starts as the ports' executive Sept. 1. He replaces Bernard Groseclose, who resigned in January.
Newsome's bonus will be awarded more on shipping volume than operating margin.
